Whoever or wherever Mother’s Day must have originated, we feel happy and proud to celebrate this day. But apart from celebrating Mother’s Day, it also important to know the history behind this day. Mother’s Day is believed to originate in England in the seventeenth century. Earlier it was called as Mothering Sunday. This is the fourth Sunday which occurs in the Lent. On this day, mothers are greeted but their children for all the love and care they have taken of their children till now. This day was celebrated by giving bouquets of beautiful flowers, cakes and chocolates to their mother and other relatives. Apart from these gifts, a delicious meal was also served on this day and each and every mother was given full rest and was treated the special person of the day.
But after some years, the Mothering Sunday became Mother’s Day and people in different parts of the country started celebrating Mother’s Day. Even today people celebrate Mother’s Day by giving flowers and sweets to their mother’s. In addition to the traditional gifts, now there are greeting cards, fruit and food items too which are given as gifts. Even now, mothers are given rest on Mother’s Day and everything special is made for her. When this occasion spread all over the world, it was named as Mother’s Day instead of Mothering Sunday.
